Microsoft's Portable Game Plans: Report From the Diffusion Group

Dean Takahashi, 01:04 PM in Dean Takahashi, Gaming

You read about it here first. But the Diffusion Group put a report out today that discusses Microsoft's plans to enter the portable games market in late 2007 or early 2008.

The press release is here. Here's an excerpt from the release. I got several no comments from Microsoft executives at E3, but this report is consistent with what I've heard.

May 30, 2006 (Dallas, TX) - New research from The Diffusion Group suggests that Microsoft will likely leverage its Xbox franchise to enter the portable game console (PGC) market in late 2007 or early 2008. According to TDG's latest report, On the Future of Portable Game Consoles: Analysis & Forecasts, Microsoft is expected to embed a portable multimedia player in a handheld gaming platform similar in many respects to Sony's PSP.

"Microsoft has been waiting on the sidelines until its gaming console and software business reached sustainability, all the while watching closely how Nintendo and consumers in general would respond to Sony's PSP," said Thomas Wolf, a portable media analyst and co-author of TDG's latest report. "With global PGC revenues expected to reach $3 billion annually by 2008, and with only Sony and Nintendo active in the PGC space, Microsoft has before it an incredible opportunity. It has a critical brand presence in the console space, the breadth and depth of gaming titles, and the marketing clout necessary to enter this space and win decent market share."

Microsoft has been evaluating two options regarding its portable gaming strategy: licensing a version of its Xbox OS for others to build portable hardware designs upon, or introducing its own branded PGC. "While licensing the software is consistent with Microsoft's larger strategy, and no doubt Microsoft has endured many failures in regard to hardware plays, the success of the Xbox presents Microsoft with a unique opportunity," said Michael Greeson, CEO of The Diffusion Group and co-author of the report. "Microsoft owns an established and highly-regarded hardware brand, meaning that they can enter the PGC market from a position of strength, a privilege not enjoyed by any other player except those already active in the PGC space."

Xbox Live Vision Camera Launch Date Revealed

Shutter opened on 360 camera - News at GameSpot

"Microsoft has been busy making sure that its Xbox 360 is up to speed. The most recent evidence of this is the massive dashboard update announced last week, which includes Web-cam support. Though the update will mean Xbox 360s are ready for the camera, it doesn't mean that the camera is necessarily ready for the Xbox 360.

The camera will be ready in September, however, according to Aaron Greenberg, group marketing manager of Xbox Live. On a podcast hosted by coworker and director of Xbox Live programming Larry Hryb, better known as Major Nelson, Greenberg said the camera will be released simultaneously in North America and Europe on September 19."

North Carolina Wants in on the Game

IGN: North Carolina Wants in on the Game

"In a time when states are trying to regulate video games left and right, you may be surprised to find out some states are actually offering tax breaks for game companies to set up shop within their borders.

North Carolina is the latest state attempting to woo developers with tax credits. Rep. Pryor Gibson (Dem.) recently introduced H2157, which would provide eligible firms a 15% break on their taxes just for making games. 'Eligible' means companies who aren't developing games with obscene content. (States all over the country have been trying to enact legislation which would classify games with sexual content as 'obscene.')

North Carolina is already home to Epic Games (Gears of War, Unreal) and Virtual Heroes (America's Army)."

Star Fox DS gets new name

Star Fox DS gets new name - News at GameSpot

"When Nintendo named the first DS installment of its 3D space-based shooter series as Star Fox DS earlier this month, it appeared the company was tapping into the same well of creativity that produced titles for Tetris DS, Super Mario 64 DS, and Mario Kart DS. Now it appears that the Star Fox DS moniker was only temporary, as Nintendo's Web site now lists the game as Star Fox Command."

Infinium Labs to become Phantom Entertainment?

Infinium Labs to become Phantom Entertainment? - News at GameSpot

Infinium Labs has endured no small amount of criticism for its choice of "Phantom" as the name of its yet-to-materialize gaming console. Originally announced in 2002, the Phantom has been subject to endless delays, false starts, numerous changes to Infinium Labs' executive roster, and even a scandal or two.

But now the company has told investors that it plans to change its name...to Phantom Entertainment, Inc. Infinium has called a special stockholders' meeting for July 13 in Tampa, Florida, where the company hopes they will vote in favor of the name change. In the SEC filing detailing the meeting, the company gave the following reasoning for the switch:

"The Board of Directors believes that the name change would be in the best interests of the Company because the new name better reflects the long-term growth strategy of the Company."

The filing also mentions another development in the Infinium Labs saga, a lawsuit brought against the company by its former CEO Kevin Bachus. According to the filing, Bachus sued the company in March for almost $51,000 in "unpaid wages and accrued and unpaid personal time off." Infinium Labs said it "plans to defend itself vigorously in this matter."

Pimp My Ride and Harley Davidson revved up for Xbox 360 and PS2? - News at GameSpot

"The Retail Radar has picked up a handful of incoming bogies from Activision on EBgames' Web site today. Online retailers have a history of leaking publishers' announcements, putting up product pages for games that haven't yet been confirmed to exist. While these listings should not be taken as official confirmation about which games are coming out for which platforms, they are frequently an accurate indicator of what might be coming just over the horizon."

June declared Ratings Awareness Month

June declared Ratings Awareness Month - News at GameSpot

As politicians across the country attempt to pass laws that give parents the tools they need to keep violent games away from their children, the industry is trying to make parents more aware of the tools already at their disposal.

June has been declared Entertainment Ratings and Labeling Awareness Month by the Coalition of Entertainment Retail Trade Associations (CERTA), a group including the newly formed Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA). This is the third consecutive year CERTA has pegged June as the month "to increase parents' awareness of the ratings and labeling systems for movies, music, and video games and let parents know that stores, online services, and movie theaters are committed to helping them control their children's access to entertainment that is inappropriate for minors."

Maryland Game Law Finds Industry Support

IGN: Maryland Game Law Finds Industry Support

"The world of recent game legislation is populated by the fast and the dead. Bills to limit or ban sale of violent games have burst up, fungus-style, across the country, where each is met with ovation and outcry, and nearly each is eventually struck down in court.

The pattern may not continue, however. A Maryland bill addressing mature games content was signed into law by Governor Robert Ehrlich on May 2 -- and unlike similar legislation elsewhere, the bill is receiving game industry support.

According to GameDaily BIZ, the Entertainment Software Association is supporting Maryland's HB707 because the law does not impose a new rating system, nor does it levy fines for selling violent games to minors. Rather, the bill effectively includes sexually mature or explicit games in the wider group of media deemed illegal to show to minors. The law does not single out game violence for such inclusion, however, which the ESA would see as a double standard for games (violent books and movies are not considered "obscene")."

Mercenaries 2 Draws Fire from Venezuela

IGN: Mercenaries 2 Draws Fire from Venezuela

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, the yet-to-be released shooting-and-exploding game in development at Pandemic Studios, is under attack by Venezuelan lawmakers as being what they decry as instruction on how to violently overthrow Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

According to Associated Press reports supporters of President Chavez, a vocal and unreserved challenger of American policy, are up in arms about about the game's overarching mission objective simulating a military invasion of the oil-rich South American nation. According to Pandemic's website, the premise of Mercenaries 2 involves "a power-hungry tyrant [that] messes with Venezuela's oil supply, sparking an invasion that turns the country into a war zone."

SiN Episodes Coming to Consoles?

IGN: SiN Episodes Coming to Consoles?

"Monday in an interview with notoriously entertaining chatter website Ain't It Cool News, Tom Mustaine, Vice President and Director of Development at Ritual Entertainment, candidly spoke about plans for a version of the SiN Episodes for Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3.

Mustaine spoke at length about the first installment of SiN's Episodic series, Emergence, as well as the history of the SiN games. In the transcribed interview Mustaine then answered a question regarding the SiN Episodes remaining a PC exclusive, saying, "We're gunna [sic] do a 360 version at some point in the future. We haven't finalized those plans yet so I haven't really announced it yet. But we will be doing it. We also are hoping to be doing a Playstation 3 version as well. We were looking at Marketplace for the 360 because episodic on Marketplace would make a lot of sense."

IGN contacted Ryan Bowling at Sony who said that no plans to bring SiN Episodes to PS3 have been announced. Requests for comment from Microsoft had not been answered at this time."

Perfect Dark Demo Live

IGN: Perfect Dark Demo Live

"It may be a little late, around six months, but a playable demo of Perfect Dark Zero is now available on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Included is the Outpost mission which can be played by yourself or cooperatively via split-screen or Xbox Live. Also in the download is a new multiplayer map, Plaza, for those geared more toward online blast fests. At 860.48 MB it'll eat up a big chunk of your hard drive, but at least it's free."

Nintendo sales down, but profit still climbs

Nintendo sales down, but profit still climbs - News at GameSpot

"Gamers may have had plenty of Nintendo news to soak up in the recent weeks, but investors want to know one thing--is Nintendo making money? The company answered that question today when it released its results for its recent fiscal year.

For the full year ending March 31, 2006, the company saw a decline of 1.2 percent in total revenues compared to the previous year. The revenue tally for the year was 509.25 billion yen ($4.5 billion).

Due to foreign exchange gains and interest income, however, the company increased its recurring profits by 10.6 percent over last year and saw a 12.5 percent gain in net profit compared with the year before. Net profit for the past year was 98.38 billion yen, or $873 million."

Wii-mote to be karaoke Wii-mic ... and Wii-phone?

Nintendo Revolution analysis: Revolution microphone

"Ok so the title is called "Revolution microphone" for something... yes, We had the mic in front of our eyes for all this months. Like in 4 distinct patents we could see in the diagram that there are two types of audio input, and 1 audio output. The output goes to the speakers. The inputs are from 2 distinct sources. The first one comes from a "Mass Storage Access Device" in a type of "streaming audio" towards the Audio/Graphics procesor (red block to yellow block). As we can see in the diagram below this "Mass Sotrage Access Device" are Discs... and the input could be audio effects and soundtrack from the game itself (Disc)."

Gates unmoved by motion-sensing controllers

Gates unmoved by motion-sensing controllers - News at GameSpot

When the next-gen systems from Sony and Nintendo hit the market later this year, they'll come equipped with motion-sensing controllers designed to immerse players further into their games. No such functionality was included in the controller for Microsoft's Xbox 360 system when it launched last November, but that doesn't appear to bother the software giant's co-founder and chairman Bill Gates.

In an interview with MTV News, Gates said there was room for innovation in gaming interfaces, but "it's something that's not mainstream for most games." The billionaire figurehead of Microsoft noted that his company tried to market a controller that sensed 3D movement several years ago (the Sidewinder Freestyle Pro), but that it didn't take.

"It's tough because sometimes you move the controller, and you don't [mean] to fly into the ground. You just want to put the controller down," Gates told MTV News. "People aren't that good at totally standing still. Even pilots actually sit in a chair when they do their flying. So there's a lot to be learned about these controllers."

PS3 second-hand clampdown is "false speculation" - GamesIndustry.biz

"A report from website GamesRadar claiming that it will be illegal to sell used software for the PS3 has been officially denied by Sony today, with a spokesperson telling GamesIndustry.biz that it is "false speculation."

GamesRadar yesterday reported that Sony was warning high street retailers that the sale of pre-owned games would be illegal due to the licensing terms of PS3 software, which would mean that discs technically remained the property of Sony.

However, a Sony Computer Entertainment UK spokesperson today outright denied that any such message had been conveyed to retailers - telling GamesIndustry.biz that following conversations with the firm's European parent company, neither division has "any knowledge" of such a strategy."

Movie industry may drop HDCP until 2012 // GamesIndustry.biz

"Top movie studios look set to delay the HDCP copy protection system - which would only work on next-gen DVD players with HDMI ports, unlike the low-end PS3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 HD-DVD peripheral - for four to six years.

The move would mean that all movie content produced until 2010 at the earliest, and possibly as far as 2012, will not carry the Image Constraint Token - a security feature which would restrict high-definition playback only to equipment with HDMI ports and HDCP encryption."

Tennessee game bill withdrawn - News at GameSpot

"In March, Tennessee state senator Tommy Kilby introduced a violent-game restriction bill that was a little more restrictive than most. The Democrat's proposed measure, SB3981, sought to make it illegal to sell or rent an "extremely violent video game" in the state of Tennessee, regardless of age.

That bill has since been withdrawn by Kilby, according to a report on Game Politics. The legislatively minded gaming news site was told by a staffer of the senator's that the measure (along with an accompanying bill introduced in the state House of Representatives as HB4052) was pulled due to concerns about its constitutionality."

More Halo 2 cheaters banned

More Halo 2 cheaters banned - Bungie.net:

Frankie over at Bungie posted some humorous letters submitted by cheaters (boosters, modders and the like) after their accounts were locked out of matchmaking. It is an entertaining read.

I think a simple solution to the problem would be to never display the matchmaking rank. The value is used to set up balanced games, yet some people get excited over this "badge" and cheat in order to artificially promote the number. The matchmaking could be just as effective if the number were never displayed, and at the same time would eliminate the primary incentive of the cheaters.

Something to investigate: Who Can Tell Us What Project Helium Was?

Original URL: http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/2006/05/an_investigativ.html#trackback
Dean Takahashi, 01:01 AM in Dean Takahashi, Gaming

Xbox360_lg_5 I've got a copy of an email about a project called Helium at Microsoft. The email came out a couple of years ago and it apparently describes an attempt to put Windows on the Xbox 360. It's one of the tidbits that I picked up while writing my book. If our collective consciousness on the web can be considered to be a "hive mind," I wonder if we can solve this mystery. Just what is, or was, Helium? Is it dead or postponed?

For the record, JonT is Jon Thomason, the former head of software for the Xbox team, sent this email to the whole Xbox group and he did not provide this email to me. The email is dated December, 2003. It describes how Helium has moved from investigation to a project. So what was it? I hear from my sources that this was the third SKU, the version of the Xbox 360 that ran Windows. It is the ultimate Trojan Horse in that respect. But Microsoft executives have consistently maintained that it makes no sense to make the game console into a full fledged PC. They reportedly canceled Helium. I hear that it was an idea they tried out to please Bill Gates' curiosity, but it never panned out. But I don't know that for sure. Is Helium something that we will see in the future? Will they save it for a high-end SKU later on? Will it be the 3.0 generation? Who can tell us? Who can speculate why it would make sense to come out with this kind of product?

I asked Peter Moore, head of Microsoft's game business, about putting Microsoft's plans for putting Windows on the Xbox 360 at E3. He said he hadn't gotten to that part of the book yet.

"You think about what we talked about in the Live Anywhere scenario and it's not device reliant," he said. "So whatever you run on your PC, on your 360, and your mobile phone, it's not about hardware and the operating system that sits on the console or the PC. Assuming it's the Xbox 360 OS. It's the Windows OS on the PC. It's not about the hardware. It's not necessary for us to do that to show progress. It's about the service. We talked about this for a long time. Hopefully Bill coming down to hammer that point home gives credence to the fact that we're very serious about this. Let's be clear only Microsoft could do this, put it all together on the platforms we built from the ground up."

I would note that one of the problems is memory. Windows Vista takes at least 512 megabytes to run. If you use up the memory in the machine to run Windows, what's left over to run games? Who would want a full-fledged Media Center PC on a game box?

Subject: Helium kicks off
Now that Helium has received formal approval, I want to announce that we’re making an organizational change.

Dwight Krossa will be reporting to me as Product Unit Manager on the Helium project. If you don’t know what Helium is, you’ll have to go ask Dwight J

He will be staffing a team to attack the substantial challenges around this and will
also work closely with Chris Pirich’s and Greg Gibson’s teams, who also have pieces of Helium to deliver.

I’m including here a note from Dwight about himself…not because he’s new to our
organization, but in kicking off this new role he will interact with a lot of
people who might not already know him:

My Life Before Helium: I have a BSCS from UC Irvine (focus on AI), and spend my
first years out of college developing voice recognition products. My career at
Microsoft started a long, long time ago, as the Build Manager for OS/2 (I have
lots of experience working with IBM). I then did tools development, writing the
OS/2 GUI equivalent to RAID and other internal tools. From there I moved to
marketing, helping to launch SQL Server and Lan Manager, then worked on Lan Manager for Unix (yes, Microsoft has actually sold UNIX products before), and was managing a product marketing team when we launched the first version of Windows NT Server.
I worked in Windows NT Server, Backoffice, and IIS, helping to launch and market all of these products as we battled OS/2, Novell, and Netscape. Have you noticed a trend? None of the products I worked on in my first 8 years at Microsoft made any money and had market dominant competitors. We eventually blew by all of these competitors. I feel right at home here in Xbox.

I then left marketing, going into Program Management for IIS. From there I did
business development for a couple of years, then moved to Developer division
product planning and then Windows server marketing, managing teams doing product planning and product marketing focusing on ISPs, Telcos and the application server platform. Last year I joined Xbox under Cameron as the Director of Random Projects, working on the Far East launch of Xbox and various investigations of new opportunities for the Xbox platform. And after a year one of those investigations is taking the next step, moving from investigation to development; Project Helium. If you don’t know what Project Helium is, stop by my office, breath the Helium, and I will explain it all.

Outside of work, my wife Nancy and I have two children Cody (9) and Ellie (6), who are very happy that I am in Xbox, because Xbox is a lot more fun to play with then a copy of Backoffice.

Please join me in welcoming Dwight to this new role!

Looks like there's some Epoxy on the firmware chip of this TS-ODD drive, so you can't easily access the legs of the firmware IC. Remove the substance (not easy at all without breaking the IC/legs, it's much harder than removing normal glue) or search for alternative points (which is easier I think, but will probably still require some harder solder work) is still an option I guess.

*Update* I knew I saved something about this on my HDD somewhere ... found it back now. Somewhere in january of 2006 Darkfly already released a pinout (alternative points) of the TS-H943 firmware chip. Here it is:

Xbox Pirates Plead Guilty

[From CleverMod.com]

The owners of a Hollywood video game store pled guilty to installing pirated games on modified Xbox consoles and could be sentenced to up to five years in prison and fined as much as $250,000.

A co-owner of a Hollywood, Calif. video game store pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court to participating in a conspiracy to violate federal copyright laws by pirating and installing video games on specially modified Xbox game consoles sold through the store, according to Thomas Loeser, assistant U.S. Attorney, U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California.

Jason Jones, 34, of Los Angeles, a co-owner of ACME Game Store, pleaded guilty in a Los Angeles federal court in Los Angeles before United States District Judge Edward Rafeedie. Jones’ partner -- Jonathan Bryant, 44, of Los Angeles -- has signed a plea agreement and is scheduled to plead guilty to a conspiracy count on Monday.

Jones admitted in court that he and Bryant modified Xbox game consoles by installing more than 50 pirated games on each machine. Jones had Xbox machines running as demonstrators in ACME Game Store, and he described in detail to customers the advantages of the modifications.

Customers paid between $225 and $500 for modifications and pre-loading of pirated video games, depending on the extent of the modifications and the number of pirated games that were pre-loaded onto the hard drive, documents stated.

Pei "Patrick" Cai, 32, of Pico Rivera, the third defendant who allegedly performed the Xbox modifications, failed to appear in court and is considered a fugitive, officials said.

Cai is charged with conspiracy; two felony violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which prohibits trafficking in technology designed to circumvent digital copyright protection technology; copyright infringement; and copyright infringement for profit, according officials.

Jones is scheduled for sentencing on August 7. The statutory maximum sentence for the conspiracy is five years in federal prison and a fine of $250,000, or twice the gross gain or gross loss resulting from the offense.

New 360 cooler in the works

Pixel Gamers - New 360 cooler in the works

"Team Xtender are set to continue their Xbox 360 cooling quest by developing a new high speed cooler for the console.

The new cooler will plug directly into your Xbox 360 via one of the USB ports, keeping you abreast of the current temperature at all times; with LEF lights flashing away like madmen should anything be happening that shouldn't.

Here is the official word from Team Xtender, "External Xbox 360 air coolers can only cool the temperature of the Xbox 360's outer surface but do not cool the temperature of the CPU/GPU; therefore, making them useless to combat CPU/GPU overheating.

"The XCM high speed air cooler directly cools the 360 CPU and GPU. Using internal temperature measuring devices, this product monitors the temperature of the 360 CPU and GPU."

Report: PlayStation 3 to cost £425 in UK - News at GameSpot

PlayStation 3 to cost £425 in UK - News at GameSpot

"Sony Computer Entertainment UK has confirmed that the retail price of the 60GB PlayStation 3 is currently planned to be £425 ($799) in the UK--although there is still a possibility that this will change before November's launch. SCEUK MD Ray Maguire told industry magazine MCV that the "60GB version looks like £425 in the UK at the moment".

However, there is no guarantee that the cheaper 20GB console will be launched in the UK. "The lower-end 20GB version of PlayStation 3 has no Wi-Fi, no HDMI, and none of the other slots in it, so it's really a question of where we would position it. It's more likely that we will only launch the 60GB version," Maguire told MCV."

Minors Get $25 Fine for Adult Games

IGN: Minors Get $25 Fine for Adult Games

"It's the hottest trend in state government, and it's sweeping the nation! Following similar bills passed recently in Oklahoma and Louisiana, the Minnesota House has passed its own 'Inappropriate Games' bill.

Proposed by Republican Representative Jeff Johnson, the bill, HF1298, requires retail outlets to put up signs explaining the ESRB rating system. And in a new twist, instead of fining retailers for selling M or AO-rated games to minors, the bill levies a $25 dollar fine on the minor. Of course, Johnson noted he is not trying to criminalize video games, and as such the offense would not go on the minor's record."

Peter Molyneux Talks Fable 2

IGN: Peter Molyneux Talks Fable 2

"We got a chance to sit down today with Peter Molyneux, Lionhead's founder and brain behind Fable 2. In a group of about ten representatives from other publications, questions were tossed out regarding Fable's successor, working with Microsoft, and game design in general. To begin, we'll give you the introduction Molyneux gave us when we first sat down.

"This is a very unique experience for me because I have never been to E3 before and not had some fantastic demo to show you all," he said. "So this is sort of a scary opportunity since I'm not just talking about a game on a screen. I can't really talk to you about features about Fable 2 but I can talk to you about some of the things that were influencing it, some of thoughts that are going on in Fable 2. I definitely can't show you anything, I can announce that we're working on another title at Lionhead but I can't tell you anything about it, other than it will be the greatest game of all time. [laughs]"
